Beautiful Shawls
Hurray! The WEFT Forum has finally started! Armed with perpetual curiosity and camera, I visited the Sarawak Tourism Complex (STC) on the very first day of the WEFT Craft Bazaar.
Two gentlemen were playing Sarawak traditional native music with a "Sape" (instrument) each, greeting the arrival of guests from all walks of life.
Booths selling local arts and crafts such as ceramic vase, china, Sarawak ethnic designed baskets, clothes, textiles were everywhere — inside and around the STC exhibition hall!
After taking a few strolls around the bazaar, I couldn’t help but stopped at a booth that sells all kinds of beautiful shawls. Yes! I ended up in getting myself 2 pieces of Muga Silk Shawls from Monisha Ahmed. However, I regret ed for not getting the 3rd piece which I tried on at the craft (see pix).
Monisha wears a handwoven, golden yellow colour Muga Silk Shawl while I put on a black one. According to her, the natural colour of the silk is obtained from wild silkworm that eats wild Muga tree leaves, it’s the pride of Assam state(Northern part of India).
